Kidney Screening

As a preventative measure, Kidney and Dialysis Specialist Centre offers free screening by appointment only wherever we have a centre as part of our community service.

Kidneys holds a pivotal role in maintaining overall health. The kidneys, are essential in performing critical bodily functions which includes filtering waste from the blood, regulating blood pressure, balancing electrolytes, and stimulating the production of red blood cells. Given their vital functions, ensuring that your kidneys are working efficiently is crucial for your body's well-being.

Why Screen Kidney Function?

Screening kidney function is paramount for several reasons. It helps in:

Early Detection: Identifying potential kidney issues at an early stage can prevent the progression of kidney disease into more severe stages, including kidney failure. Identifying potential kidney issues at an early stage can prevent the progression of kidney disease into more severe stages, including kidney failure.

The Kidney Screening Procedure

Kidney screening involves a series of urine and blood tests focused on evaluating kidney function. One of the primary metrics assessed through these tests is the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). GFR is a critical indicator of kidney health, measuring the rate at which your kidneys filter waste from your blood.

GFR Measurement

The determination of GFR is instrumental in diagnosing and monitoring kidney health. A decreased GFR rate may indicate impaired kidney function, necessitating further medical evaluation and potentially leading to early intervention strategies.

The Tests Involved

  1. Blood Tests: These tests measure levels of various substances in your blood, including creatinine and urea nitrogen. Elevated levels of these substances can indicate reduced kidney efficiency.
  2. Urine Tests:    Urine tests examine the presence of protein, blood, and other elements that should not be in urine if the kidneys are functioning correctly. The presence of these elements can signify kidney damage or disease.

The Importance of Regular Screening

Regular kidney function screening is recommended, especially for individuals at higher risk for kidney disease. Risk factors include diabetes, hypertension, family history of kidney disease, and advanced age. Early detection through regular screening can lead to timely interventions, potentially preserving kidney function and preventing further complications.

Conclusion

Kidney screening is a simple yet powerful tool in assessing kidney health. By understanding the importance of kidney function tests and the details of the screening procedure, individuals can take proactive steps towards maintaining their kidney health. What Is Chronic Dialysis?

Chronic dialysis is a medical process that performs the function of the kidneys when they can no longer do so effectively on their own. This treatment method is essential for individuals with end-stage renal disease or chronic kidney failure. By artificially removing waste, salt, and extra water from the blood, dialysis prevents these substances from accumulating in the body, thereby maintaining safe levels of certain chemicals in the blood, such as potassium, sodium, and bicarbonate. It also plays a crucial role in controlling blood pressure and minimizing the symptoms of kidney failure.

Plasma Exchange Procedure

Plasma Exchange Procedure

At Kidney and Dialysis Specialist Centre, we offer Plasma Exchange Therapy (PET), also known as plasmapheresis. This is a medical procedure that purifies the blood of certain substances that may be causing medical problems or diseases in the body. This therapy has become a pivotal approach in the treatment of various autoimmune diseases, where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. By removing the plasma portion of the blood, which contains the harmful antibodies, and replacing it with a plasma substitute, this treatment aims to reduce the severity of symptoms and potentially induce remission in patients.

Key Benefits of Plasma Exchange Therapy

The primary benefits of Plasma Exchange Therapy include:

Removal of Harmful Substances: By specifically targeting and removing the plasma component of blood, PET effectively eliminates harmful antibodies and other pathogenic substances that contribute to disease processes.

Rapid Symptom Relief: For certain conditions, PET can provide quick relief from symptoms by directly removing the antibodies responsible for disease flare-ups.

Versatility in Treatment: Plasma Exchange Therapy can be used in conjunction with other treatments and medications to manage or treat diseases more effectively.

Customizable Treatment: The procedure can be tailored to the specific needs of the patient, depending on the volume and frequency of plasma exchange required.

    The Plasma Exchange Therapy Process

The process of Plasma Exchange Therapy involves several key steps:

    1. Access Creation: A specialized intravenous (IV) or central venous catheter is inserted into a large vein to provide access for the blood to be drawn and returned.

    1. Blood Withdrawal: Blood is withdrawn from the body and directed into a medical device that separates the blood components.

    1. Plasma Removal and Replacement: The plasma portion, which contains antibodies and other substances, is removed. This plasma is then replaced with a plasma substitute, which can be albumin, saline, or a combination of both, along with the patient’s red cells, white cells, and platelets.

    1. Reinfusion: The treated blood, now with the plasma substitute, is returned to the patient through the catheter.

Conditions Treated with Plasma Exchange Therapy

Plasma Exchange Therapy is used to treat various conditions, primarily autoimmune disorders, including:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Particularly for aggressive cases or exacerbations that do not respond to steroids.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome: To quickly remove antibodies attacking the nervous system.

Myasthenia Gravis: To reduce the levels of antibodies impairing neuromuscular transmission.

Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP): To manage symptoms and improve function.
